Natural Libido Help for Women

by Monica Villarreal

The loss of sex drive in women usually stems from several health concerns. In most cases, these things can be treated to help your sexual life get back to normal. Lets take a look at some of the reasons why your libido can suffer a decline and then well cover a few proven herbs that help boost sexual desire naturally.

Reasons for Loss of Sex Drive in Women

* Stress, depression, and even childbirth are contributing factors to the lack of sex drive that women have. These situations may not be as easy to fix, but they are common signs of something being wrong.

* Hormonal imbalance. There are many types of things that can be imbalanced including progesterone. Progesterone is responsible for your libido but can fall quite low during pre-menopause.

* Fatigue. Of course you can see that there is a real connection here. One of the most common reasons for fatigue is the fact that there is another hormonal imbalance or there is poor nutrition coming into the body.

* Adrenal exhaustion can also be a factor that causes the hormones to go the wrong direction. It can be caused by medical menopause occurrences.

* Hypothyroidism. One of the symptoms of low thyroid function is low libido. Have your thyroid checked to rule out this health problem.

What Can You Do To Boost Your Libido?

There are many women that will wonder if there is anything that can be done. Sometimes, we think that this is just normal and try to forget about it. Yet, there is not a reason to do that. In fact, those women that are experiencing a loss of sex should consider a womens libido enhancer.

There are several natural products on the market that are libido enhancers for women. These can improve the sexual desire that a woman has and also can enhance intimate relationships. They work because they address the hormonal imbalances in order to get the body moving in the right direction again.

Safe womens libido enhancers often come in the form of herbal supplements. Here are some of the herbs that can help with improving the sex drive in women.

Sabal Serrulata: this is the biological name for the herb Saw Palmetto. This herb can be used to treat both male and female low libido conditions. It works by triggering the body to produce the right hormones to aid in sexual drive.

Genitiana Lutea Radix Powder: this herb is used for a total well being that promotes the optimum use of all organs in the body. It helps by allowing them to function at the highest level possible.

There are two other herbs that help boost libido naturally and are used to revitalize the sex life in women. Visit loss of sex drive in women to learn more about them.

Living Happily with Menopause

by Sanjay Singh

Menopause means the last menstrual period and actually happens between 45 and 55, although today its even happening to women of 40. It signals an end to ovarian function and the ability to conceive and menstruate.

Leading up to this time, as there are 40 eggs developing, the ovaries gradually secrete less of the hormonestrogen (which gets her set for pregnancy) and progesterone (which sheds the uterine lining when conception does not take place). Periods become irregular and stop. Ovulation ceases. After a year of no periods you dont need a medical diagnosis to tell you that she has menopaused. It is only then that you can stop using contraception.

No periods means no PMT, but does not mean a full stop to their activities.
Menopause also happens if the uterus and ovaries or both ovaries have been removed in a hysterectomy. If the uterus alone has been removed then she will not have periods or babies but her ovaries will continue to secrete hormones every month. Menopause will occur at such time as it would have naturally.
Short-term symptoms. Usually disappear or are accepted as the body and mind adapts to the changes such as hot flushes, burning hands and fee, palpitations, facial hair, dizziness, lethargy, fatigue, fainting, itchy skin, genito urinary infections, loss of libido, vaginal dryness, hysteria, unreasonable fears, wrinkles.
Long term symptoms are heart disease with Estrogen no longer watch dogging a womans heart, fatty deposits and bad LDL cholesterol can build up in her arteries, increasing the risk of strokes and hear attacks in 60% of women; osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes Alzheimers all of which can be prevented and treated.
One third of women escape unscathed with non-or very mild symptoms.
Does menopause hit suddenly?. There is a transitional period called perimenopause, which is a preamble to the actual thing. Neither your mother of mother-in-law were aware of it, because it had not been identified in their time. Perimenopause arrives earlier and earlier, due to environmental changes and bad nutrition. During this time Estrogen and Progesterone levels fluctuate wildly from very high to none at all. Thats why sudden strange symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations, sweating, irritability which are mistaken for PMT pop in and out erratically without any discernible pattern.
One of the first harbingers can be irregular periods shorter, longer, lighter, heavier. They may disappear for months and become clockwork regular again.

Will the hot flashes go on forever? The Estrogen imbalance causes a dilation of the blood vessels, which increases the skin temperature and makes the skin look red.
88% of women suffer from hot flushes (or flashes), night sweats, dizziness, burning feet and hands, which can last from 30 seconds to 5 minutes and are guaranteed to curdle the blandest disposition.
Now while these aggravations can occur without any provocation, they can be triggered by anxiety, over exertion, hot coffee, spicy food, synthetic garments.
The good news is that without any medical intervention, the symptoms vanish like a bad dream within one to 5 years.
In the meantime women could try the following tactics that have been shown to ease the discomfort:
Belly breathing Sit comfortably in a quiet spot. Inhale slowly and deeply through the nose for 5 seconds so that the belly expands, then exhale through your mouth for 5, continuing for 15 minutes. The more she does it, the fewer heat waves shell have. Researchers believe that deep breathing may drop the bodys core temperature slightly.
Exercise. Taking regular Spin classes wont nix hot flashes, but menopausal women who exercise do report less flash induced discomfort. Apparently, the hear and soaking that come with flashes and nigh sweats dont seem so distressing for a regular exerciser.

Smell the relief A recent Japanese study of 15 women found that those who got 20 minute aromatherapy rubdowns and performed self massages with scented oil three times weekly reported fewer hot flashes and sounder sleep after 1 month.
Other tricks getting extra vitamin E, more fluids, shunning hot drinks and hot baths, wearing loose cottons.
Fruit, veggies and phytoestrogen rich foods (peas, chowli, rajma, soy) trick the body into believing that it has more estrogen than it really does.
Boron (found in apples, beans, cabbage, figs, plums, prunes, strawberries) helps the body to hold on to its estrogen supplies.
Herbal help Research from Germany on black cohosh has shown that it can reduce the severity of hot flashes and night sweats similar to that seen in estrogen therapy.
Medication for severe cases. Doctor may prescribe Estrogen and other supplements for short periods.
Why do menopausal women suddenly start looking matronly? Quite often women put on weight after menopause because they feel that it is the end of their attractiveness. They neglect their appearance and indulge themselves with food.
A typical woman gains an average of almost 4.5 kgs before menopause at the age of 35 to 45, and only another 0.9 kg between 45 to 55.
Here is where men come in. Make changes in both your food habits. Eat small frequent balanced meals together. Give up the daily post-dinner dessert habit, if you must have a sweet, make it a fruit for a single square of dark chocolate. You dont have to live on salads. Experiment, to create titillating lean cuisine lean meat and green veggies, sprouts and beans, wholegrain low fat dairy and fish, the market is flooded with easy-to-follow cookbooks.
Recognize that neither one of you can indulge in fries and potato chips like twenty-year-olds.
The good news is that these dietary changes also help protect a womans and your heart.
Exercise regularly together, Start with yoga, swimming, walking after getting your doctors nod.
All this tots up to better bodies, added stamina and more togetherness.
Why do some women turn all weepy at this time? Menopause has long been blamed for mature womens blahs. But psychiatrists case studies show that these women seek help because they already have emotional problems. Studies at Yale Medical School find that the signs of depression and stress are not worse in menopausal women as compared to younger ones.
Sometimes the emotional symptoms that are pinned on menopause like crying jags, temper tantrums, panic attacks, lack of concentration et al result from sleeplessness due to night sweats, troublesome teens, coming for aging parents, failing careers, retirement, poor self esteem. The connection to menopause could merely be co-incidental. Always talk to your doctor to get to the root of the problem.

Yoga, relaxation techniques, meditation and massage can help her and youre to cope better.
Be especially tender to your mate who has cosseted you through the years. Give her a foot, or head massage. Surprise her with a coupon for a makeover. Help her revamp her wardrobe.
Enroll her in an exercise regimen to release feel good hormones. Bring back a joke or two with the daily bread. Maintain an active interest in her day, encourage new hobbies and games, and see how her spirits will lift.
If the symptoms of anxiety, weight change, sleeplessness, memory loss, social withdrawal, stress, palpitations are severe it could be clinical depression. Consult a psychiatrist, which doesnt mean that she is crazy, but just needs help.

Does Menopause means Men-O-Pause, as in, the end of a womans sex life? Estrogen deficiency causes the vagina to thin and shrink, and lubrication to decline resulting in vaginal dryness, soreness, itching and bleeding after intercourse. The tissues of the urinary tract also shrink, leading to frequent infections and incontinence.

Sadly it is wrongly believed that sex is a youthful pursuit, which oldies should relinquish. Women proudly or ruefully proclaim: That part of our life is over

A great many women actually experience an increase in sexual pleasure after menopause: The children are independent, there is more privacy and leisure, they dont have to worry about an unwanted pregnancy. The bonus? Spontaneous sex.

Happily, estrogen is not the libido hormone. Its testosterone, your male hormone, which her adrenal glands also produce for many years after estrogen has bowed out.
Some older women may also develop a larger and more complex system of veins in the genital area, which can help orgasm.

The most important thing is to stay sexually active to stimulate blood flow and flexibility to the vagina and surrounding tissues. Its disuse, not use that causes atrophy.

Although inevitably both your sexual systems will age, along with your sight, taste, smell and hearing, you have to change focus, tone down expectations, accept limitations, not-so-firm breasts, and saddlebags. Penetrative sex may become less frequent. You have more time for innovations in foreplay, which can serve as a delightful multi-dimensional alternative to intercourse.

Sex in any form can bring closeness and contentment

Three Top Herbs Used in Menopause

by Marjorie Geiser

In many industrialized countries, menopause can be a time of great discomfort and stress. Menopause is not a disease, to be viewed as something to be treated, but a passage in life from childbearing years. The symptoms American women may experience include hot flashes, mood swings, irregular bleeding, memory problems, decreased sexual interest and other changes that effect the enjoyment of sex. Although dietary habits and amount of activity a woman engages in can decrease many of these problems, genetics and previous health can also play a role in how severe the symptoms can be for a woman.

Multiple studies today indicate that taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may not be as safe as previously believed. As just one example, in July, 2002, the Womens Health Initiative Study published results that demonstrated that the risks of HRT outweighed the benefits. Now more and more women entering menopause are considering natural solutions to resolving uncomfortable symptoms of this life transition.

There are three particular herbs of interest when entering menopause. They include Black Cohosh, Chaste Tree Berry and Red Clover.

Black Cohosh

Black Cohosh is also known as Black Snakeroot, Bugwort, Rattleweed, Snakeroot, among other names. Black Cohosh was first used medicinally by Native Americans who introduced it to European colonists. Do not confuse black Cohosh with two unrelated plants, Blue Cohosh and White Cohosh.

Black Cohosh is one of the most popular herbal remedies for menopausal symptoms. Overall, the research supports that using Black Cohosh can help reduce menopause-related hot flashes. The research is a bit mixed on exactly how Black Cohosh works and if it has estrogen-like activity. Some research does show that in any estrogen-like activity, this activity does not pertain to the reproductive organs, such as breast, endometrium, and ovaries. A big question for women going into menopause is whether this is a safe herb for women with a history of cancer; the research generally says it is. However, for all women, this herb should not be taken for unlimited amounts of time.

There are also concerns of liver toxicity with the use of Black Cohosh. Until more is known, anyone who wishes to take Black Cohosh should consult their health practitioner and monitor their liver function to be on the safe side. It would also be wise to avoid taking it along with other herbs that may increase the risk of liver damage, which include androstenedione, chaparral, comfrey, DHEA, germander, kava, niacin, pennyroyal oil, red yeast, and others.

Remifemin, a branded black Cohosh product, has been used in Germany since the mid-1950s to manage menopause. Research that has been done generally has used either Remifemin or two other products produced by Enzymatic Therapy and Phytopharmica.

As mentioned earlier, before taking this and most other supplements, make sure to discuss them with your doctor, particularly if you are taking any prescription medications or have any medical conditions. All herbs do have various interactions with other substances.

Chaste Tree Berry

Chaste Tree Berry is also known as Vitex, Chinese Vitex, Hemp Tree, and Mang Jing Zi, among others. An interesting bit of history is that historians say that monks chewed Chaste Tree parts to make it easier to maintain their celibacy.

This herb has been most often recommended for relieving symptoms related to premenstrual syndrome (PMS), such as bloating, headaches and cramping. Although this is where most of the research has focused, it is now being studied to see if it can help with menopausal symptoms as well, and has also become quite popular for this use although there have only been three studies looking into how it could help with hot flashes in menopause.

The therapeutic effects of Chaste Tree Berry have primarily been attributed to its indirect effects on various neurotransmitters and hormones. It seems to increase levels of progesterone and decrease levels of estrogen. Theoretically, Chaste Tree Berry might interfere with the action of dopamine antagonists such as antipsychotic drugs due to dopaminergic effects of Chaste Tree Berry. It is believed that this herb could interfere with any hormone-related medications. Finally, there is a report that some women who were receiving invitro fertilization procedures and taking Chaste Tree Berry were unable to get pregnant. Consequently, if you are taking any medications or have a history of any medical conditions, speak to your health professional before starting this herb.

This is an herb that is not recommended for women with a history of any hormone-related cancers. However, for others it does appear to be safe. So, particularly for women who suffer from PMS or have mild menopausal-related hot flashes without a history of cancer, this could be an effective herbal remedy.

Red Clover

Other names for Red Clover include Genistein, Meadow Clover, Purple Clover, Trifolium, among others. Do not confuse Red Clover with Sweet Clover, Soy or Liverwort, however.

As a food, Red Clover is considered safe. Medicinally, there have only been four studies on Red Clover for menopause and three of these showed no benefit. Research has considered a possible blood cholesterol-lowering affect, decreasing prostrate size, and perhaps a positive effect on cancer, but research has not definitively supported any of these benefits, yet.

There is some evidence that red clover isoflavones can inhibit oxidative and conjugative metabolism. The list of possible drug and herbal interactions is so large that the best recommendation is to never consider this herb without a long discussion with your doctor, or avoid this herb completely.

This is an herb that appears to be safest when eaten as opposed to taken as a nutrition supplement. Although it could be safe for healthy persons with no medical history or on medications or other herbs, it does not appear to relieve any menopause symptoms. It also is an herb recommended to be avoided by any woman with a history of cancer.

We have just reviewed three popular herbs taken to relieve menopause symptoms. Of the three, the one with the best safety and effectiveness profile is Black Cohosh. Chaste Tree Berry has been shown to be most effective for PMS and should not be taken by women with a history of breast cancer. Red Clover appears to be something safer to eat than take as a supplement and should be avoided by women with a history of cancer, as well as people on any other medication or herbal product. Something that I hope readers were able to realize is that although herbs are a natural form of medication, they still do work like drugs and should be taken as seriously as prescription medications are. Interactions are possible with all substances and before taking any herbal product, I highly recommend that you consult with a healthcare professional with adequate education and background to help you make an informed decision on how to best handle symptoms.

Finally, its important to point out that in some societies there is not even a word for menopause. Women pass through this stage of life without notice. This makes it very clear that lifestyle has much to do with how a woman experiences this period of time in her life. If you currently suffer from symptoms of menopause, there are several things that you should evaluate. These include:

The amounts of fruits, vegetable and whole grains you eat daily,

Your intake of saturated fat, animal products and refined foods,

Your alcohol intake and smoking habits,

Regular exercise habits.

Each of these factors plays a large role in not only your health but how you experience the journey through menopause.

Menopause and Osteoporosis

by Cathy Taylor

We know that our bodies require calcium and vitamin D in order to build and maintain powerful bones. According to his recent book entitled, Preventing and Reversing Osteoporosis, by Dr. Alan Gaby, it takes more vitamins than we think to prevent brittle bones including Vitamins K and B; as well as minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, fluorine, silica and boron.

The idea is to provide enough combined supplementation for our bodies to make an abundance of healthy collagen which is the connective tissue used to create cartilage and bones. Collagen also binds our cells together and as a result, someone with good collagen has healthy looking skin whereas another will have thin and wrinkled skin.

A healthy bone cut in half looks similar to a sponge. The body deposits calcium, phosphorus and other minerals onto all of those connective fibers and you get healthy bones! The holes give the bone its flexibility, and you wont have healthy bones if you dont have plenty of collagen on which to deposit the minerals.

Collagen is primarily a protein which is made from amino acids. Our bodies can create some of our requirements but we also need additional amounts from our foods and supplements including lysine and praline. Vitamin C is also required to create collagen.

Now we know how bones can be made stronger, but how is this process affected by menopause? The loss of estrogen due to menopause or possibly surgical removal of the ovaries can accelerate bone loss for a period of up to 8 years. It is well established that replacing that estrogen helps protect against the risk of osteoporosis.

More often, womens bones become fragile as we age and its not uncommon to break bones in the wrist, spine and hip due to osteoporosis. Unfortunately, a fracture such as in the hip, can even shorten our life span so it is important to pay attention to our bone health.

What should be done to prevent osteoporosis from happening after menopause?

First of all, eat the foods that are calcium-rich (about 1,000 mg per day) and can enhance bone growth including: sardines, salmon, seafood, and green leafy vegetables such as swiss chard, beet tops, kale, mustard greens, collards, spinach, dandelion greens, watercress, parsley, chicory, turnip greens, broccoli leaves, almonds, asparagus, blackstrap molasses, broccoli, cabbage, carob, figs, filberts, oats, prunes, sesame seeds, tofu and other soy products.

Vitamin D-rich foods include fish oils such as found in salmon, mackerel, sardines), eggs (including the yolks), sweet potatoes, tuna, vegetable oils and cod liver oil. Getting 15-20 minutes of sunlight exposure daily can also boost production of vitamin D.

Exercise is crucial; in particular, you need weight-bearing exercise such as walking, Tai chi, dancing and weight training to reduce the chances of brittle bones at least two times a week. Include 15 to 60 minutes of aerobic activity two to three times a week. Avoid high-impact activities and include stretching exercises.

Finally, use high-quality supplements prescribed by your doctor or health-care provider, and oh yeah, dont forget to have fun.

Menopause Supplements

by Jodie Phillips

Menopause is the most trying and difficult period in a womans life. It usually occurs to a woman, who is in her late 40s. During menopause, the quantity of female hormones produced reduces significantly. This results in many physical and mental changes in a womans body like loss of calcium, hot flushes, dry skin, itchiness, and osteoporosis. However, women today are more aware of this phase of their life and willing to face it. They are ready to take menopause supplements that will help fight menopause. Menopause supplements help reduce many of the menopause symptoms and reduce the physical discomfort faced by several women.

Menopause supplements come in both natural forms and as medical supplements. It is always better to take a natural menopause supplement in the form of green vegetables. Natural ingredients also do not have any side effects compared to medicines. The advantage of natural estrogen is that it is not carcinogenic unlike medical supplements that can cause cancer.

Several plants like soy contain estrogen in the natural form. Soy contains isoflavones that can mimic estrogen and give good relief from hot flushes. One must take soy either raw or cooked to benefit from the isoflavones. The best source of isoflavones is pomegranates. Red clover, dong quai and licorice are other sources of plant estrogens that form natural menopause supplements.

One can consume these natural menopause supplements as whole fruits or vegetables or as pills available at pharmacists. One can eat soy flour or eat bread made from soy flour. Such products are now readily available in the market. Women can consume these products before the onset of menopause to get relief from hot flushes.

A woman can take menopause supplements in the form of hormone therapy. This therapy varies for every woman depending on her medical and family history. In this menopause supplement, the woman gets estrogen and progesterone in different doses according to her need. A woman with a uterus receives both hormones while a woman who has undergone a hysterectomy gets estrogen.

Women can take hormone replacement therapy in the form of oral medication or as topical application in the form of ointments. The dosage and frequency of the medicine depends on the individual. This menopause supplement should stop when the symptoms subside. This is because it can cause blood clots and breast cancer if taken over a long time.

There are several menopause supplements available in the market. These contain a mixture of soy and flax seeds. The fiber is good for digestion and one is consuming natural estrogen. Other experts recommend consumption of gingko, seaweeds and ginseng for relief from menopausal problems.

Nowadays there is a variety of menopause supplements available in the market. However, since they regulate the hormonal balance of the body one must take them carefully under a doctors guidance. A woman must choose the menopause supplement best suited for her condition and after a careful consideration of its side effects.

Hot Flashes And Night Sweat Remedies That Really Work

by Patsy Hamilton

Treatments for hot flashes and night sweat remedies are relatively easy to find. The question is whether or not they work. There may be natural ways to avoid hot flashes for some women. These depend mostly on a womans lifestyle and diet. What works for one woman may not work for every woman, but there are some products that are very popular and scientific research supports their use.

Most women approaching menopause experience hot flashes and night sweat, remedies that are effective are sometimes hard to identify, because the actual cause of hot flashes and night sweats is unknown. It is believed that sharp decreases in hormonal levels are at the root of the problem.

Hot flashes or flushes and night sweats are different names for the same type of physical symptoms. They are referred to as vasomotor symptoms, because blood vessels and circulation are involved. They may begin years before actual menopause and last for several years afterwards. The frequency and severity varies from one woman to the next.

Typically the heat begins in a womans chest, travels up the neck to the face and head. When they occur at night, they may interrupt a womans sleep, increasing levels of fatigue and sometimes leading to insomnia. From the experiences of other women, we know that caffeine, alcohol, tobacco products and spicy foods can trigger them, as can anger, frustration and irritation. Avoiding stimulants and alcohol may be effective natural ways to avoid hot flashes and night sweats.

Of all hot flashes and night sweat remedies, the most commonly recommended is black cohosh. More research has been done concerning the effectiveness and safety of black cohosh than on any of the other herbs that can help menopause hot flash symptoms. Some women using black cohosh report that it is 100% effective. Using herbs is one of the popular natural ways to avoid hot flashes, if you have tried black cohosh and it does not seem to work for you, there are other plant components that may be effective.

Scientists are still unsure why black cohosh provides such effective relief for hot flashes and night sweat remedies are often less effective. Evaluations of the chemical compounds of other plants have revealed an estrogen-like substance, aptly named phytoestrogens. Black cohosh does not appear to contain phytoestrogens. It seems to affect other chemicals in a womans body. Phytoestrogens are believed to relieve menopause hot flash symptoms by replacing some of the estrogen lost as the ovaries stop functioning, similar to the idea behind hormone replacement therapy.

Isoflavones are one type of phytoestrogen. If you read the ingredients on some hot flashes and night sweat remedies, you may see soy isoflavones or isoflavones from red clover. Adding soy to the diet is believed by some to be one of the natural ways to avoid hot flashes; however research has shown that dietary supplements containing isoflavones are more effective.

While no long term studies have been conducted concerning women who use phytoestrogens or isoflavones as hot flashes and night sweat remedies, short term clinical studies have revealed their effectiveness, lack of side effects and safety. Even the idea that phytoestrogens, which are found in soy beans, a health food, might not be safe for long term use seems silly. People eat soy all of the time and have for many, many years.

Red clover is grown for animal feed. Native Americans used the flower for tea and chewed the leaves raw. Healers used it to treat liver ailments, gall bladder ailments, ulcers, diabetes, tonsillitis, internal cancer, appendicitis, headaches and as one of the natural ways to avoid hot flashes.

Scientific research and the experiences of other women confirm that hot flashes and night sweat remedies containing red clover or other phytoestrogens and/or black cohosh are effective. Laboratory tests have revealed that black cohosh has no effect on even estrogen sensitive cancer cell lines. For more information about these and other natural ways to avoid hot flashes, please visit the Menopause and PMS Guide.

For PMS Emotional Symptoms a Natural Anti-Depressant Is Available

by Patsy Hamilton

PMS emotional symptoms may include any or all of the following: aggression or irritability, depression or tearfulness, anxiety or nervousness, or just mood swings in general, happy one moment, sad the next. The PMS treatments most commonly prescribed by physicians when these symptoms interfere with relationships or ones general sense of well being are anti-depressants.

The brand names are probably familiar; Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa and Prozac, just to name a few. These are all anti-depressants that belong to a group known as Selective Serotonin Re-Uptake Inhibitors or SSRI for short and are commonly prescribed PMS treatments. Although the cause of PMS is unclear, the function of serotonin in the body is relatively well known. It is a neurotransmitter, meaning that it helps to transmit signals among nerve endings in the brain and body. It helps to regulate moods, sleep cycles, appetite and metabolism.

An SSRI prevents serotonin from breaking down so quickly, allowing it to be more effective in the nervous system. Studies have shown that serotonin levels are lower than normal in women who suffer from premenstrual dysphoric disorder or PMDD. And, since serotonin is known to regulate moods and an SSRI can usually control clinical depression and PMDD, doctors often prescribe the drugs for women who suffer form moderate PMS symptoms, as well.

Some PMS treatments focus on relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises. One study found that women who suffer from chronic hyperventilation had symptoms similar to those of PMS. Another study concluded that of all the conditions for which relaxation techniques were commonly recommended, it was most effective in relieving PMS.

Behavioral modifications such as relaxation techniques can relieve chronic stress. Chronic stress increases levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, circulating in the blood stream. Some researchers believe that cortisol can be toxic to the hypothalamus, actually causing it to shrink. It is known that depressed people have a smaller hypothalamus than people who have never been depressed. The hypothalamus has numerous serotonin receptors, but a smaller hypothalamus means fewer serotonin receptors.

Chronic stress can lead to anxiety and depression, inhibits proper immune system function, can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease and increases PMS emotional symptoms. Everything is connected.

An SSRI may be one of the most effective PMS treatments, but the side effects are numerous and objectionable to many women. The most commonly experienced side effects are drowsiness, headache, sexual dysfunction, increased sweating and dilation of the pupils, which can interfere with normal vision. Depending on your age, an SSRI can increase night sweats, a symptom related to menopause. For many women, this writer included, relieving PMS emotional symptoms is not worth adding a whole new list of other problems.

Luckily, nature has provided us with a natural anti-depressant. The Earth Mothers pharmacy can relieve most of our ailments, if we only know where to look. Increasing dietary intake of substances that the body uses to create serotonin or serotonin precursors can increase serotonin levels in the blood stream and the brain, thus improving mood and relieving PMS emotional symptoms.

The safest and most effective serotonin precursor is 5-HTP. Found in some dietary supplements, studies have shown that 5-HTP can relieve symptoms of depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances and migraine headaches. It can reduce the effects of chronic stress, help the body relax and relieve PMS emotional symptoms. Natural PMS treatments abound, some are nothing more than vitamin supplements. To learn more about them and how to choose the best ones, please visit the Menopause and PMS guide.
